What You Need to Know

Articling represents a first step in the journey towards becoming a lawyer. Having successfully completed law school and the stress of the bar exams, what can students expect during their first weeks as an articling student?

The articling program at DV is about giving students the opportunity to supplement their theoretical knowledge of the law with practical, hands-on experience that focuses on developing skills for professional success. The first few weeks of the DV articling program are all about making the transition from academia to practice as seamless as possible by exposing students to meaningful work early on, while also ensuring that they have access to experienced mentors to guide them along the way. According to Ken Pimentel, current articling student at the firm,

“Much is done at the firm to try to make your transition to the practice of law and to the firm as comfortable as possible. When I began my articles two weeks ago, much of the attention was on ensuring that I was adequately oriented and had access to the supports necessary for moving forward. At the same time, I have had the opportunity to attend hearings, assume carriage of various files, and interact directly with clients all under the supervision of lawyers who are experts in their fields and always willing to teach.”

At DV, we understand the importance of providing a meaningful experience that will prepare students for a successful career in the legal profession. This is achieved by offering in-depth exposure to all areas of law practiced by our firm and maintaining an ongoing commitment to the professional development of our students.
